 Exothermic welding powder, also known as exothermic welding compound or exothermic welding mixture, is a substance used in a process called exothermic welding, which is a method of joining two electrical conductors using molten metal. This process is commonly used for permanently bonding copper conductors in electrical grounding and bonding applications, such as lightning protection systems, grounding grids, and telecommunications installations.

Here's how exothermic welding works:

  1. Preparation: The conductors to be joined are cleaned and placed into a mold, with the ends to be joined positioned to make contact.

  2. Enclosure: A graphite crucible, often referred to as a "mold," surrounds the conductors and contains the exothermic welding powder.

  3. Ignition: A spark or starter material is used to initiate the exothermic reaction in the welding compound.

Exothermic Reaction: When the welding material reacts chemically, it releases heat and turns into molten metal at temperatures that are often higher than 2,500°C (4,500°F).

Forming a solid, electrically conductive bond: The molten metal fills the area between the conductors in the mold to the fullest extent possible.

Cooling: The mold is taken out and the welded connection is let to cool once the molten metal has set.
